This name has since become widespread and is often incorrectly applied to other types of polyamides. They are referred to by numbers that represent the number of carbon atoms of the parent compounds \u2013 e.g. <strong>PA6, PA6.10, PA12, etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PA11 we use is a type of polyamide used primarily for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selective_laser_sintering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SLS technology<\/a>. This is a rather unexplored area in the field of FFF 3D printing. We have experimented quite a lot in this field and finally achieved more than a good result. Why did we choose PA11? Commonly used PA6 and PA12 polyamides have a number of disadvantages: PA6 is extremely hygroscopic, making it extremely difficult to print with it even 1 day after unpacking. In some cases, PA6 can get absorb too much moisture even during long printing runs. PA12 isn\u2019t as hygroscopic, but it warps extremely and has very poor adhesion to a standard PEI print sheet. PA11 is a good middle ground \u2013 <strong>it\u2019s less hygroscopic<\/strong> and offers <strong>better adhesion<\/strong> to the PEI print sheet (for small and medium-sized models).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed.jpeg\" data-ob=\"lightbox[47141]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"835\" src=\"https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed-1024x835.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46989\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed-1024x835.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed-1024x835.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed-1024x835.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed-1024x835.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed-1024x835.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/prusament.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/filament_mikroskop-scaled_fixed-1024x835.jpeg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Prusament PA11 Carbon Fiber under an electron microscope<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to <strong>added carbon fiber<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/prusament-pa11-carbon-fiber-black-800g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prusament PA11 Carbon Fiber<\/a> is <strong>virtually non-warping.<\/strong> Compared to pure polyamide, it has slightly weaker interlayer adhesion, roughly comparable to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/prusament-pc-blend-carbon-fiber-black-800g-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber<\/a> \u2013 still a very good result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic Mechanical and Chemical Properties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Polyamide PA11 is a material <strong>made from castor oil,<\/strong> the carbon fibers added to this filament are <strong>recycled,<\/strong> as with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/prusament-pc-blend-carbon-fiber-black-800g-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber.<\/a> Probably the biggest advantage of this material is its <strong>high-temperature resistance, up to 190 \u00b0C<\/strong> depending on the load. As for other mechanical properties (impact strength, tensile characteristics), these are similar to those of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/prusament-pc-blend-carbon-fiber-black-800g-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber<\/a>. If the absorbed humidity reaches high levels, the print quality will deteriorate. Deterioration occurs between a few days to a month. If you are not sure how long it has been since you opened the sealed bag or if you haven\u2019t been printing for a long time, we recommend <strong>drying the filament at 90 \u00b0C for 4-6 hours<\/strong> before printing. Absorbing moisture may sometimes be noticeable through removing supports. Up until now, we have recommended printing polyamides on textured or satin print sheets with a layer of adhesive (glue stick), but this has not proven to be a very suitable option. Sure, smaller models with sparse infill can be printed on PEI sheets coated with stick glue but for reliable printing of technical models, you need something better. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/prusament-pa11-carbon-fiber-black-800g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prusament PA11 Carbon Fiber<\/a> in particular can easily peel and warp when printed on conventional sheets, despite being filled with carbon fiber. Besides polyamides, it is also <strong>compatible with PETG,<\/strong> printing with other materials is not recommended due to a weak adhesion. Even polyamides themselves differ in their composition and may <strong>come with various adhesion properties.<\/strong> Many polyamides, especially clean (without carbon fibers for example), have a strong warping tendency. That\u2019s why some materials may require using the brim function even if they stick to the surface nicely. So far, we cannot say if any of the untested polyamides have strong or weak adhesion \u2013 that\u2019s why we recommend printing only <strong>the polyamides mentioned in our <a href=\"https:\/\/help.prusa3d.com\/materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">material table.<\/a><\/strong> These filaments work just fine with our special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/double-sided-powder-coated-pa-nylon-satin-spring-steel-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PA Nylon print sheets<\/a> with selected printing temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For easy print removal and a long sheet lifespan, you need to only <strong>wash it with water before every use<\/strong> and set the first layer height. We strongly recommend <strong>NOT washing the sheet with Acetone, IPA <\/strong>(isopropyl alcohol) and other alcohol-based chemicals (including window cleaner, 3DLAC, etc.). Using IPA (and other chemicals) makes the surface matt and changes the surface structure and adhesion. This leads to a shorter lifespan and a much <strong>higher risk of damaging the sheet.<\/strong> If you have visible grease stains (fingerprints for example), you can clean the sheet with water and dish soap. The surface of your sheet looks different under a microscope than in the photos above.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Print settings and other printer equipment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/double-sided-powder-coated-pa-nylon-satin-spring-steel-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">special print sheet<\/a>, <strong>printing with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/product\/hardened-steel-nozzle-e3d-v6-0-4-mm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hardened nozzle<\/a> is required<\/strong> due to the highly abrasive properties of carbon fiber.
